P-G finishes treacherous Ypres Rally in 19th, Basso falls

The Geko Ypres Rally happened over the weekend as the fifth leg of this year’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC). The Belgian asphalt rally was a treacherous one that claimed many big names, including local favourite Thiery Neuville and Skoda drivers Andreas Mikkelsen and Jan Kopecky. Proton’s Giandomenico Basso also failed to finish but teammate P-G Andersson managed to complete the rally in 19th place.

Proton’s Swede was among the 61 finishers of 124 cars that started the two-day 18-stage rally. 31 entrants were S2000 cars. Racing across narrow farmland roads, the extreme wet, cold and slippery conditions made the event extra challenging.

The rally was won by home boy Freddy Loix, who led from start and did not put a wheel wrong. The Skoda man is now top of the IRC driver standings. Peugeot’s Bryan Bouffier was second and debutant Hans Weijs completed the podium in a Fabia.

Proton pilots Basso and Andersson had both come within nine seconds of creeping into the top 10 places before being struck by misfortune. Pushing hard after finishing the first day in 11th and just nine seconds adrift, Basso’s rally came to an end in SS7 when he hit a low brick wall hidden in tall grass. That knock put his Satria Neo S2000 in a ditch.

Meanwhile, P-G began to pick up his pace in the rally and shot from 18th in the opening stage (SS7) to move up to 17th and then 16th over the next two SS. By SS10 he was 12th and with one stage to go in SS17, the double Junior WRC had brought the Satria Neo S2000 to 11th and within 8.9 seconds of a top-10 finish.

But it was not meant to be. Proton’s valiant charge was dealt a cruel blow when P-G’s final push saw him went wide 2km into the 10km final special stage (SS18). The Neo’s left rear wheel was damaged, but Andersson was still able to continue, losing 24 seconds in the process to eventually finish in 19th.

Despite the heartbreak, the team sees the encouraging pace as a “real competitive assessment of where we are currently in terms of development and how much more we need to do in the IRC” according to Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood, Head of Proton Motorsports.

“Although this is Proton’s first full year in the IRC, we are certainly making valuable progress and heading in the right direction as far as development of the Satria Neo S2000 and the brand is concerned,” he added. Chin up guys, better luck next time!

Public response to new Myvi overwhelming, says Perodua

AYER KEROH: Perodua says the public response to its new Myvi has been "overwhelming", with 12,000 bookings received.

"As of June 24, we have received bookings for about 12,000 MyVi units and we expect, by end-July, for about 2,000-3,000 new Myvi cars to be on road," said Perodua managing director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh.

He said the company was maintaining its sales target at 195,000 units and the new MyVi would account for 50 per cent of that sales.

On another matter, Aminar said Perodua will open its first sales, service and spare-parts (3S) centre in Malacca next year.

He said the company was finalising a land agreement with the state to locate the centre in Ayer Keroh.

"Previously, the state offered us a piece of land at Autocity, Malacca, but since the place is still new, we don't think it suits our interest.

"Therefore, we are selecting a place somewhere nearby "Taman Buaya", Ayer Keroh, as a major hypermarket is expected to be built here. We believe it can attract a crowd," he told a media briefing on the sidelines of the "Perodua Eco-Challenge 2011", here on Saturday.

He, however, declined to reveal the cost of the 3S centre expected to start operations by the end of next year.

To date, Perodua operates 16 3S centres nationwide.

Cabaran Eko Perodua 2012 Mungkin Libatkan Pelajar Bukan Kejuruteraan

Dua Pengedar Kereta Nasional Diarah Kembalikan Deposit Berjumlah RM20,855

Perodua Akan Buka Pusat 3S Pertama Di Melaka Tahun Depan

Government To Enact Energy Efficient Law Soon

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- The Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry plans to enact an energy efficient (EE) law soon to push for EE in a big way, Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui said.

He said EE initiatives were in the supply side, while there was so much scope in the demand side currently.

Speaking at the "1Malaysia Gala Dinner in Celebration of the 20th Year of Support to the Malaysian French Business Trade" here, he invited French energy service companies to start operations in Malaysia, especially in initiating EE projects at the demand side.

Chin said the ministry would be launching the feed-in tariff mechanism in September.

He said renewable energy (RE) would be eligible for premium tariffs that would help surge in RE in Malaysia.

"We have projected RE to contribute to 10 per cent of our fuel mix for power generation in 2020," he said.

Chin also welcomed French automotive companies to explore opportunities in the electric vehicle (EV) programme in Malaysia.

He said the ministry had received requests from foreign car companies to facilitate the entry of their EVs here.

Proton Dealers Ask Government To Defer New Hire Purchase Act

Proton Dealers Ask Government To Defer New Hire Purchase Act

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- The Proton Edar Dealers Association Malaysia (PEDA) has asked the government to defer the implementation of amendments to the Hire Purchase Act 1967.

Its president, Armin Baniaz Datuk Pahamin, said the postponement was to facilitate a review of the new law which, he said, had been gazetted without prior consultation with the industry.

In a statement, he said the amendments which took effect yesterday were considered not pragmatic and could potentially stall the growth of automotive industry.

He said vehicle dealers would be facing serious cash flow problems if they had to hand over booking fees and deposits to the bank first.

Besides, the price of used cars would also be affected when costs also increased with more stringent sale and purchase requirements, he said.

"About 70 per cent of new vehicle sales depend on trade in. With this, the market for new cars is also expected to be affected," he said.

The new Perodua Myvi was launched last night by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
